Thankful Thursday - Thankful for the thorns

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

Thankful Thursday is hosted by Crystal @ God is in Control … NOT ME!. Thank you, Crystal for hosting Thankful Thursday, again this week.I was not sure what to post this week, then I opened my email and found my post. This week, instead of a list, I am going to share an email. I know it is not my personal TT, but it is something that I am thankful for. I have my thorns. We all do.

What arrangement will you have on your Thanksgiving table?

Thorns….. Thank You Lord

Sandra felt as low as the heels of her shoes when she pulled open the florist shop door, against a November gust of wind. Her life had been as sweet as a spring breeze and then, in the fourth month of her second pregnancy, a “minor” automobile accident stole her joy.

This was Thanksgiving week and the time she should have delivered their infant son. She grieved over their loss. Troubles had multiplied. Her husband’s company “threatened” to transfer his job to a new location. Her sister had called to say that she could not come for her long awaited holiday visit. What’s worse, Sandra’s friend suggested that Sandra’s grief was a God-given path to maturity that would allow her to empathize with others who suffer. “She has no idea what I’m feeling,” thought Sandra with a shudder.

“Thanksgiving? Thankful for what?” she wondered. “For a careless driver whose truck was hardly scratched when he rear-ended her? For an airbag that saved her life, but took her child’s?”

“Good afternoon, can I help you?” Sandra was startled by the approach of the shop clerk. “I….I need an arrangement,” stammered Sandra. “For Thanksgiving? I’m convinced that flowers tell stories,” she continued. “Are you looking for something that conveys ‘gratitude’ this Thanksgiving?” “Not exactly!” Sandra blurted out. “In the last five months, everything that could go wrong has gone wrong.” Sandra regretted her outburst, and was surprised when the clerk said, “I have the perfect arrangement for you.”

Then the bell on the door rang, and the clerk greeted the new customer, “Hi, Barbara, let me get your order.” She excused herself and walked back to a small workroom, then quickly reappeared, carrying an arrangement of greenery, bows, and what appeared to be long-stemmed thorny roses. Except the ends of the rose stems were neatly snipped: there were no flowers.

“Do you want these in a box?” asked the clerk. Sandra watched, was this a joke? Who would want rose stems with no flowers! She waited for laughter, but neither woman laughed. “Yes, please,” Barbara replied with an appreciative smile. “You’d think after three years of getting the special, I wouldn’t be so moved by its significance, but I can feel it right here, all over again,” she said, as she gently tapped her chest.

Sandra stammered, “Ah, that lady just left with, uh. . .She left with no flowers!” “That’s right, said the clerk. “I cut off the flowers. That’s the ‘Special.’ I call it the Thanksgiving Thorns Bouquet.

“Barbara came into the shop three years ago, feeling much as you do today,” explained the clerk. “She thought she had very little to be thankful for. She had just lost her father to cancer; the family business was failing; her son had gotten into drugs; and she was facing major surgery.”

“That same year I had lost my husband,” continued the clerk. “For the first time in my life, I had to spend the holidays alone. I had no children, no husband, no family nearby, and too much debt to allow any travel.”

“So what did you do?” asked Sandra. “I learned to be thankful for thorns,” answered the clerk quietly. “I’ve always thanked God for the good things in my life and I never questioned Him why those good things happened to me, but when the bad stuff hit, I cried out, “Why? Why me?!” It took time for me to learn that the dark times are important to our faith! I have always enjoyed the ‘flowers’ of my life, but it took the thorns to show me the beauty of God’s comfort! You know, the Bible says that God comforts us when we’re afflicted, and from His consolation we learn to comfort others.”

Sandra sucked in her breath, as she thought about what her friend had tried to tell her. “I guess the truth is I don’t want comfort.

I’ve lost a baby and I’m angry with God.”

Just then someone else walked in the shop

“Hey, Phil!” the clerk greeted the balding, rotund man. “My wife sent me in to get our usual Thanksgiving arrangement…..twelve thorny, long-stemmed stems!” laughed Phil as the clerk handed him a tissue wrapped arrangement from the refrigerator. “Those are for your wife?” asked Sandra incredulously. “Do you mind telling me why she wants a bouquet that looks like that?”

“Four years ago, my wife and I nearly divorced,” Phil replied. “After forty years, we were in a real mess, but with the Lord’s grace and guidance, we trudged through problem after problem. The Lord rescued our marriage. Jenny here (the clerk) told me she kept a vase of rose stems to remind her of what she had learned from “thorny” times. That was good enough for me. I took home some of those stems. My wife and I decided to label each one for a specific “problem” and give thanks for what that problem taught us.” As Phil paid the clerk, he said to Sandra, “I highly recommend the Special!”

“I don’t know if I can be thankful for the thorns in my life.” Sandra said to the clerk. “It’s all too. . .fresh.” “Well,” the clerk replied carefully, “my experience has shown me that the thorns make the roses more precious. We treasure God’ s providential care more during trouble than at any other time. Remember that it was a crown of thorns that Jesus wore so we might know His love. Don’t resent the thorns.”

Tears rolled down Sandra’s cheeks. For the first time since the accident, she loosened her grip on her resentment. “I’ll take those twelve long-stemmed thorns, please,” she managed to choke out.

“I hoped you would,” said the clerk gently. “I’ll have them ready in a minute.” “Thank you. What do I owe you?” “Nothing. Nothing but a promise to allow God to heal your heart. The first year’s arrangement is always on me.” The clerk smiled and handed a card to Sandra. “I’ll attach this card to your arrangement, but maybe you would like to read it first.”

It read: My God, I have never thanked You for my thorns. I have thanked You a thousand times for my roses, but never once for my thorns. Teach me the glory of the cross I bear; teach me the value of my thorns. Show me that I have climbed closer to You along the path of pain. Show me that, through my tears, the colors of Your rainbow look much more brilliant.”

Praise Him for the roses; thank Him for the thorns. God Bless all of you. Be thankful for all that the Lord does for you.

“Live simply, love generously, care deeply, speak kindly, leave the rest to God”.

What are your thorns? Can you be thankful for the thorns?

I am thankful for

  • my health and not knowing exactally what is wrong, as it makes me want to live each day to the fullest.
  • the loss of my baby 9 years ago, as it makes me realize how precious my living children are and how much they need me.
  • the fights that my beloved and I have, as it makes us see that we really want to be together. We will do what it takes to work it out.

Be sure to visit Crystal @ God is in Control … NOT ME! to read what others are thankful for.

This week, Thankful Thursday is hosted by Crystal @ God is in Control … NOT ME!. Thank you, Crystal for hosting Thankful Thursday.

2 Cor 5:21: For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (ESV)

This verse is on my heart a lot lately. There is a reason for it but that is for another post for another day.

  • Today I am thankful for the fact that through Christ, we are made righteous.
  • I am thankful that I get to work this afternoon.
  • I am thankful that my family all my family is in good health. We are all together.
  • I am thankful that I have “good” kids who do not go out and “party”.

Thankful Thursday

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

You know, when I woke up this morning and realized that I would have time to participate in Thankful Thursday, I did not expect the news that I read when I pulled up Sting My Heart. Well, I suppose it was not a huge shock, if you read Iris’ blog, but still, it saddened my heart. Before I start in on my post, I want to speak to Iris. I know that you do not know me, but you and your blogging has touched my life greatly. I will be keeping up with you at the Internet Cafe and Laced with Grace. I will be praying for you, while you go through the issues in your life. I look forward to your return to Sting My Heart. You are a very dear Christian woman, and I have enjoyed reading your blog.

I thought about going with a theme, but to be honest with you, I have a hard time sticking to one theme, if you cannot tell by my blog. It is a personal blog with strong emphasis on Christ. Then I read Sting My Heart this morning and I decided to run with what my heart tells me I need to share.

16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.
17
For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please.
18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law.

  • I am thankful for Iris and her hosting of Thankful Thursday. Allowing other people to share what they are thankful for, and making them feel like friends.
  • I am thankful for Lynn, Laurel and Crystal, for helping out and taking over the hosting while Iris takes a break. Thank you, ladies!
  • (and with those thanks, I blew my theme, but lets see if I can get back to it).
  • This week I did a lot of studying about the flesh and the Spirit. The Word has been speaking a lot to me about that. I am thankful for God’s Word, that it is like an instruction manual for our lives.
  • I am thankful for the countless resources that are provided to help us learn from God’s Word.
  • The resource that I am the most thankful for is God, Himself. The Holy Spirit helps us to understand what the Word is saying. He is always with us, indwelling in every believer.
  • I am thankful that my oldest has not had any accidents and that all is well with his driving (0ff my theme, again).
  • I am thankful that his job is going well, and that he enjoys going to work.
  • I am thankful that he is playing for the youth worship team and that he is learning worship music on his guitar. I love hearing him play, now. ;)
  • I am thankful that he chooses his friends more wisely now (looks like I could do an entire thankful post on him ;) )
  • I am thankful that my husband’s best friend got married this past weekend. It is so wonderful that at 40+ people can find there true love and fall madly in love. Not marrying until you know that this is the person that God created to love you. It was a beautiful wedding. The Bride and Groom are very happy.
  • I am thankful that I go get my blood work this week and I go back to the rheumatologist next week. It will be good to have more answers, if it is God’s time for me to know.
  • I am thankful to God for all things, good and bad. He created the earth and everything in it. Even sin is not created by the devil, it is a perversion of something that God created.

With that, I leave you this morning. If you would like to participate in Thankful Thursday, or read other posts, please visit Sting My Heart to join in.

    Thankful Thursday

    Thursday, September 27th, 2007

This week Thankful Thursday is being hosted by Lynn @ Spiritually Unequal Marriage. Thank you, Lynn for hosting TT this week, while Iris is on vacation.

Also, I work from 8:30 AM to 9:30 PM today and Saturday, and 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM on Friday, so I may not make it by all the participants blogs this week, but I will certainly make it by early next week, when things slow down.

So much to be thankful for… where do I start?

John 3:16 (NASB): “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

How humbling is it, that Jesus willing came, took our sins upon Himself, and died for us, so that we could have fellowship with the Father? Very humbling. Thank you, to our Triune God, that He loved His creation enough to redeem us.

I am thankful that I have a job where I can invest my life, my friendships with people, and that maybe the seeds I plant with them will bud into a new life in Christ, someday.

I am thankful that I have a job where we all get along and that we pull together when one of us needs something.

I am thankful that this is the last chemo session for my friend Jo. With that, I also pray that her MRI comes back clear, next month.

I am thankful for good Christian fiction.

I am thankful for my friends.

I am thankful for my husband. He is a good man. He is a good husband. He is a good father. I love you, Jim.

I am thankful that we were able to get Moosey a truck, that he can practice driving in, since he gets his licenses in less than 2 weeks.

I am thankful that no matter what, things always end up working out for the glory of the Lord. We may not see it, we may make bad choices along the way, but in the end, God’s will always is accomplished. Oh, what a beautiful thought. (Look for a post about that coming when I have time to type it out.)

Be sure to stop by Spiritually Unequal Marriage and read what others are thankful for this week, and be sure to participate. It is such a blessing to think about what all God has done for us.

    Thankful Thursday

    Thursday, August 16th, 2007

    Psalm 139:14 (NIV):
       I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
    your works are wonderful,
    I know that full well.

This verse is on my heart lately, (might have something to do with a study I am doing. ;) ) but I thought it was an appropriate way to start out my Thankful Thursday. Praising God and being thankful is what this is all about, right? I have so much to be thankful for. God is so good.

    • Earlier this week, I confessed that I read a book that bothered my spirit. I had no peace. Well, I have asked God to forgive me for putting secular entertainment ahead of Him. God has not only forgiven me, but He has blessed me for finally seeing that I am to avoid that type of entertainment (fantasy, magic, etc.).  I have real peace (not circumstantial peace, but the kind of peace that can only come from Him), and my ears hardly rang yesterday. I am so thankful that no matter how far we go, He will always take us back.
    • I am thankful that God has given many people musical talent and that we have a great number of Christian musicians that we can listen to. It helps me to keep away from secular rock, when we have bands just as talented, or even more so, that we can listen to, who praise Jesus with their music.
    • I am thankful that when we are faithful, He blesses us. I stopped tithing for a while, but I tithed all of last month. I got a raise yesterday. :) You have no idea how wonderful this is to me. You see, I have been working for this company off and on, but more on than off, since December 2003. I got a raise my first 2 weeks working there. I have not gotten another one since then. You have to remember they are a very small company. There are the two owners, who are husband and wife, and three to four employees at any given time. Very small company.
    • I am thankful that there is a dinner at church tonight, for the women’s ministry, and I am going. It will be a blast. They are going to have tables set up for each of the different things that women can get involved in my church. I cannot wait. It is going to be so much fun.
    • I am thankful that Valorie will be there, tonight. I so enjoy getting to spend time with my sister.
    • I am thankful that I can call my mom almost every day, and use my monthly cell phone minutes, and not have to pay long distance.
    • I am thankful that Moosey is not as wild as he looks.
    • I am thankful that Moosey has found someone to play the music with, who has the same values as he does. They get together at least weekly and play their instruments. I pray that, if it is God’s will for their band to work out, that the right musicians fill those empty spots.
    • I am thankful that Boog has a a friend that he can talk to every day.
    • I am thankful that school starts in 11 days and counting. :)
    • I am thankful that I had time to blog yesterday. I will not publish that much on one day, in the future however, I will write it out and publish one or two a day ;) (I still have more to go in the disciple series).

What are you thankful for? Why don’t you head on over and visit Iris and join in on posting your own Thankful Thursday?

    Thankful Thursday

    Thursday, August 9th, 2007

I decided to go back to doing the original Thankful Thursday. There is nothing wrong with Becki’s version, Thankful Thursday 13, as it is a great idea, but I dunno. I just a thought… I am doing that A LOT lately. Getting nostalgic and lost in my thoughts. :)

I have so much to be thankful for. I really do.

    • I am thankful to God for His wonderful creation. I just think about it and get goose bumps. It is amazing to think that the God who created all this, loves me. He really cares about each of us. That just blows my mind to think about that.
    • I am thankful for friends, like Becki, Heather and Christina. Even though I was “gone” from the blogosphere, these gals cared about me and that is what true friendship is all about.
    • I am thankful for family. We lean on each other and help one another out. When one of us gets exhausted, another one will lighten the load, knowing that when they need their load lightened, the first one will be there to help.
    • I am thankful for Valorie (read above only multiply by 100) [Um, just in case you wanted to know, the brunette in the profile picture is your's truly. I know many of you have never seen a picture of me]
    • I am thankful for Having answers
    • I am thankful for Places with infomation, where I can connect with others who are going through the same things.
    • I am thankful for my friends over at Blog Mommas and Moms Making a Difference.
    • I am thankful for blogging. It helps me to see the bigger picture.
    • I am thankful for the Bible. God’s word is wonderful.
    • I am thankful for Bible studies that can help you understand things like how to discern God’s will and other wonderful topics.
    • I am thankful for my church. It is big, but it has the heart of a small church. I just love it.

If you are interested in reading what others are thankful for, you can see the participants over at Sting My Heart.
